When I was pregnant lots of parents gave me advice (Enjoy going to the\ngrocery store by yourself while you still can! Go out on dates! Clean your\nhouse!). One even warned me that becoming a parent would “rock my world.” I\nthought I understood. I thought I was prepared for the huge change coming. And\nwhile I wasn’t unprepared, I really had no idea exactly how life-changing\nbecoming a parent would be. Now I try to explain to my friends who don’t have\nchildren what exactly getting swept into parenthood felt like, and the best I\nhave come up with is this—I had my daughter and she was more wonderful than I\ncould have imagined, and the rest of my life fell into chaos. One of those\npieces of my life was my relationship with my husband. We look at each other\nand marvel that we used to sit around on the weekend and lament that we did not\nknow what to do with ourselves. Now we would give anything to learn the secret\nto freezing time. Now we try to hold on as life rushes by. up” has become one of the most popular pieces of\nadvice in Western culture. It’s not popular with me, though. I do\nagree that persistence in the face of obstacles is necessary, important, and\nadmirable. Many worthwhile goals require serious commitment and perseverance in\norder to achieve them. The problem with this advice is that at some point in\nour lives, we all have goals that are unattainable, and this is where “never\ngive up” falls short. When faced with an unattainable goal, giving up and\ntrying something else might be a better course of action than continuing to try\nagain and again. We have a precious, limited amount of time, energy, and other\nresources, and there may be times when these are better directed at a new goal. \u003Co:p\u003E\u003C\/o:p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003E\nIn psychology, we refer to “giving up” as disengagement and\nto “trying something else” as reengagement. When a goal is unattainable,\nsome of us have stronger tendencies than others to disengage and then reengage.\nIt’s easy to think of people who have a tendency to give up as being weak or\ndepressed. However, research shows that is not the case! When goals are\nunattainable, the tendencies to disengage and then reengage are actually associated\nwith higher subjective well-being. In this study, people who were told to use sunscreen daily had\nfewer lines and less coarse skin after four years than those who used it as\nthey normally would. I’ve seen this study all over the news (\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887324063304578523174000785786.html?mod=ITP_personaljournal_0\"\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2335528\/Adele-Green-study-Breakthrough-study-finds-daily-sunscreen-use-stops-wrinkles-tracks.html\"\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E, and\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/06\/03\/sunscreen-skin-aging-_n_3380828.html\"\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E)!
